What is a topographic survey?

A topographic survey measures the three-dimensional shape of a site: ground elevations, slopes, contour lines, and the position of existing features: buildings, walls, trees, utility poles, creeks, roads. The output is a topographic plan (in DWG + PDF) that designers use to set floor levels, design drainage, plan earthworks and position structures. Where the project requires it, the survey is tied to established control points so the plan is georeferenced in PRS92.

When do you need one?

  • House construction and building design: Architects and structural engineers need the actual levels and boundaries of the site before design. On sloping lots, designing without a topographic survey is guesswork.
  • Site development plans and permits: Development applications and building permit sets commonly include a site plan based on an actual survey; requirements vary by LGU, so confirm the checklist of your city or municipal engineering office.
  • Drainage and flood-prone sites: In many Philippine cities and towns, getting water away from the building is the design problem. Accurate elevations are the starting point for any drainage solution.
  • Earthworks and cut-and-fill estimates: Contractors price grading work from the existing terrain. A topographic survey lets them compute cut-and-fill volumes instead of padding the bid.
  • Roads, farms and larger sites: Access roads, irrigation, orchards, resorts and warehouses all start with a terrain model. For large sites, see also drone mapping.

When is it not necessary?

  • Flat lot, minor works: For small works on genuinely flat urban lots, some designers work from the lot plan and spot checks. Ask your architect or engineer what the design actually needs.
  • You need boundaries, not elevations: If the question is where your lot lines are, not how the ground rises and falls, what you need is a relocation survey.

Field data is processed in CAD/civil software to generate the surface model, contour lines at the interval your project needs, and the finished topographic plan.

Delivery

You receive the topographic plan in DWG + PDF, signed and sealed by the PRC-licensed Geodetic Engineer, georeferenced in PRS92 where required, ready to hand to your designer or include in your permit set.

What to ask the Geodetic Engineer before hiring

  • What contour interval and detail level will you deliver? A house design may need 0.5 m contours and every wall and tree; a farm plan may not. Agree on the specification up front.
  • Will the plan be georeferenced in PRS92? If the plan will support government submissions, it should be tied to established control, not drawn on an assumed local grid.
  • Are you PRC-licensed? Ask for the PRC registration number and verify it online. Signed and sealed plans by a licensed GE are what government offices accept.
