Drone Mapping in the Philippines

What is drone mapping?
Drone mapping (UAV photogrammetry) captures hundreds of overlapping aerial photos of a site and processes them into survey products: a georeferenced orthophoto (a true-to-scale aerial map), a dense point cloud, contour lines and a digital terrain model. Combined with ground control points measured by GNSS and verified by a Geodetic Engineer, the result reaches accuracy suitable for planning, design and volume computations, over areas that would take weeks to survey on foot.
When do you need it?
- Large properties and estates: Farms, haciendas, resorts and multi-hectare family land, where a complete conventional survey would be slow and costly, and where an up-to-date aerial map supports planning and negotiation.
- Site development and master planning: Developers and designers get terrain plus current ground conditions (vegetation, structures, roads, waterways) in one dataset.
- Quarry and stockpile volumes: Periodic flights measure extracted and stockpiled volumes accurately, without stopping operations.
- Construction progress monitoring: Repeat flights document as-is site conditions over time for owners, lenders and contractors.
- Difficult or hazardous terrain: Steep slopes, tidal flats, dense growth or unstable ground. The drone maps what a field crew cannot safely walk.
When is it not the right tool?
- Boundary re-establishment: Property corners for legal purposes are set on the ground by a relocation survey, not from the air. Drone output supports, but does not replace, the legal survey.
- Small urban lots: For a few hundred square meters, a total station or GNSS crew is faster, cheaper and (under trees and beside tall structures) often more accurate.
- Heavily forested ground: Standard photogrammetry maps what the camera sees. Under closed canopy, the ground surface requires other methods; discuss the site honestly at quotation stage.
How does the process work?
Request and flight plan
Send the site location, approximate area and the products you need (orthophoto, contours, volumes). The Geodetic Engineer replies with a price in pesos (₱), the expected accuracy and a schedule within 24 hours.
Ground control
Before the flight, ground control points are set and measured with survey-grade GNSS tied to PRS92 control. This is what turns pretty pictures into survey data.
Flight
The drone flies the site in a programmed grid at the altitude and overlap the accuracy requires, under CAAP rules and with any needed clearances in place.
Processing and delivery
Photos are processed into the orthophoto, point cloud, contours and terrain model, checked against the ground control. You receive the products in standard formats (GeoTIFF, DWG, PDF; point data on request), certified by the PRC-licensed Geodetic Engineer.
What to ask before hiring
- Will ground control points be used? Accuracy claims without GNSS-measured ground control are marketing, not surveying. Ask how accuracy will be verified and reported.
- Is the operation CAAP-compliant? Registration, certification and any airspace clearances are the operator's job, but they are your project's risk if skipped.
- Who certifies the output? For survey-grade deliverables, the processing and quality control should be under a PRC-licensed Geodetic Engineer, especially if the products will support official submissions.
